A lovely deep salad bowl with a gaffer standing at the bottom of his cottage steps. The outside with a stile and stone walls. Beautifully painted and in excellent condition. No chips, cracks or restoration; shows the usual glaze crazing typical of these wares, though nothing to detract. Special Royal Doulton Gaffers backstamp. Diameter 20.3cm (8in), height 8.9cm (3.5in)

The series was designed by C. J. Noke, who was interested in English heritage and literature. The series features 19 different scenes. The scenes depict the Gaffer, an older man or master, in his smock, with an umbrella or stick, and are associated with Somerset dialect
