Exquisite 1860 Copeland handpainted jug with hand crafted handle
Exquisite 1860 Copeland handpainted jug with hand crafted handle
A good quality and large Copeland Parian ewer or handled jug with globular body, dating from c1860-80. The upper part of the body has been enamelled with a decorative stylised band of pendant convolvulus flowers and foliage beneath a red wave design band. The handle has also been decorated in green, red and gold. There are decorative gold bands inside and outside the neck, around the widest part of the body, and above the foot. The base has an impressed 'COPELAND' mark, and the number 9361 in red. Height 23.5cm (9.3")
What appears to be an identical jug is shown in the colour plate on p7 of The Parian Phenomenon.
Provenance: from the Charles Handley-Read collection (by repute).
Condition: This ewer is in very good condition. There are a few surface marks around the body and to the base, and a small circular firing fault (probably a burst bubble) on the neck near the top of the handle. There is some light wear to the gilding around the rim. As can be appreciated from our photos, the enamelled decoration of flowers and foliage is in very good condition.
