Victorian Rococo Revival style two-handled grand butler's tea tray
This is a Victorian Rococo Revival style two-handled grand butler's tea tray (silver-plated). At 76 × 46 cm (approx. 30 × 18 inches across handles), it is an unusually large presentation tray designed to hold full multi-piece tea and coffee services.
Key Design Features
-
Cast Rococo Rim: The raised rim features a heavy, applied high-relief border decorated with wild roses, floral blossoms, and C-scroll foliate motifs (classic Rococo Revival style).
-
Flat-Chased Field: The surface is elaborately engraved with scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and fine lattice (diaperwork). Beyond aesthetic appeal, chasing served a practical purpose by hiding scuffs and surface scratches caused by silver teapots, porcelain, and glassware.
-
Central Cartouche: The center area inside the scrolling pattern is kept relatively clear, traditionally reserved for a family crest, monogram, or gift presentation inscription.
-
Twin Cast Handles: Double-scrolled, heavy cast handles with acanthus leaf thumb-rests designed to safely bear significant weight.
Material & Construction Clues
-
Base Metal: Silver-on-Copper.
-
Weight: Due to the dense cast handles and thick applied border, trays in this format typically weigh between 3.5 kg and 5+ kg (8–11 lbs).
