The Glashütte Limburg Bubble Pendant Lamp, an icon of German mid-century design from the 1960s, is most famously attributed to Finnish designer Helena Tynell. Known for her pioneering work in glass, Tynell’s collaboration with the German glass specialist Glashütte Limburg brought these distinctive "bubble" textures to a global market.
Key Design & Characteristics
-
The "Bubble" Texture: The lamp features a hand-blown glass shade with a raised, organic texture designed to resemble clusters of soap bubbles or clouds. This structural glass creates a spectacular play of light, scattering illumination in a decorative, atmospheric manner.
-
Glass Variations: While clear glass is the most common, authentic models were also produced in amber, brownish-amber, and smoked glass, as well as versions with frosted sections at the top. Some rare versions even feature subtle rosé tints.
-
Hardware: The glass shade is typically mounted to a polished brass or antique brass-toned fitting. In some cases, a minimalist black iron ring or frame was used, reflecting a more industrial German mid-century aesthetic.
-
Dimensions: These pendants were made in multiple sizes. Common diameters include 20 cm, 25 cm, and 30 cm, often sold as sets to create a "playful effect" at varying heights.
- Originally designed for E27 (Edison screw) bulbs, these fixtures generally support up to 60 watts and are compatible with both 110V and 220V power sources.
