The ginger jar originated in the days of the Qin Dynasty (221 BCE-207 BCE) as a storage receptacle for spices like salt and ginger. When ginger became a chief export to the Western world, the vessels in which it was stored and transported became known as “ginger jars.” In the 18th and 19th centuries, ginger jars became objects of interior design. Their popularity as beautiful decorative items continues today.
This is an absolutely fabulous Late Ming Period (the 1630s) ginger jar. It is a somewhat rustic pottery jar glazed with beautiful blue and white. It features a seaside scene with sailboats on the side opposite of a village scene. Upon inspection contractures in the glaze and rust spots along with the quality of the glaze indicate this piece's age.
