Antique Blue and White Transferware Plate - "Wild Rose" Pattern by B. Well & Co

​This is an attractive English antique earthenware plate featuring a rich blue and white transfer printed design.

​Pattern and Design:

The plate displays the popular "Wild Rose" pattern, which is a classic example of early to mid-19th century transferware. The rim is decorated with a detailed border of wild roses and foliage. The central scene, often identified as a view of Nuneham Courtenay in Oxfordshire, depicts a picturesque rural landscape with a river or lake in the foreground, complete with figures in boats and a fisherman on the bank. In the middle ground, a bridge spans the water, leading towards a thatched-roof cottage and a grand house or castle on a hill in the distance, framed by lush trees.

​Maker's Mark and Origin:

The reverse of the plate bears a clear, printed blue mark within an oval cartouche that reads "B. WELL & C. NEWCASTLE ON" above the pattern name "WILD ROSE". This mark indicates the plate was manufactured by B. Well & Co. (likely a shortened form of a larger or later company name) in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, a known center for pottery production. The style and pattern suggest a production date roughly within the 1830s to 1850s.

​Plate Condition:

The plate is in good overall antique condition, consistent with its age (approximately 170–190 years old).

​Front: The transfer print is clear and dark blue with good coverage. There is a fine network of crazing (small lines in the glaze) visible, which is typical for earthenware of this period. There are some light surface scratches and minor knife marks from historic use.

​Back: The back stamp is crisp and legible. The foot rim shows expected wear.
