Cauldon Ltd Blue Transferware Two-Handled Cup & Saucer, Brown-Westhead Moore & Co, circa 1904-1920
From the Cauldon Works of Stoke-on-Trent comes this two-handled cup and saucer in deep blue transfer-printed ware, its backstamp bearing the names Cauldon Ltd and Brown-Westhead Moore & Co alongside the familiar "Est 1774" date. The scenic pattern, printed in rich cobalt blue against clear white porcelain glaze, depicts a castle above a river landscape with figures and boats, framed by ornate scrollwork borders.
About the Maker
Backstamps that include the name Cauldon Ltd date to the 1904 to 1920 period, when Brown-Westhead Moore & Co was incorporated as Cauldon (Brown-Westhead Moore & Co) Ltd at the Cauldon Place Works. The "Est 1774" date was a marketing flourish the firm used to evoke its earlier Ridgway lineage rather than the founding date of the company itself.
