This is a classic  crystal cheese cloche (or butter dome) featuring a matching cover and scalloped underplate.

Key Design Features

  • Cutting Pattern: The dome is decorated with traditional diamond cross-hatching (hobnail) integrated with starburst and fan cuts that catch and refract light.

  • Finial Handle: Topped with a faceted, solid spherical glass knob designed for an easy grip when lifting.

  • Underplate: The coordinating saucer features a radial fluted rim with a serrated/scalloped lip, surrounding a recessed center to keep the dome securely in place.

Function & Culinary Tradition

  • Usage: Cloches were designed to keep artisanal cheeses (such as small wheels of Camembert, Brie, or portions of Stilton) or butter at ideal serving temperature while protecting them from air and insects on the dining table.

  • Versatility: Smaller crystal cloches of this size were also frequently used as butter dishes, marmalade covers, or bonbon servers for afternoon tea.

Origin & Estimated Era

  • Era: Typically produced between the 1950s and 1980s.

  • Common Manufacturers: This style was widely produced by top British, Irish, and European crystal houses:

    • British & Irish: Edinburgh Crystal, Stuart Crystal, Webb Corbett, Royal Brierley, or Waterford.

    • Continental European: Bohemian Glasswork (Czech Republic), Nachtmann (Germany), or Cristal d'Arques (France).
