The blue and white pitcher is characteristically an antique transferware, a decoration method developed in the mid-18th century that allowed for the mass production of ceramic items with intricate prints. The use of cobalt blue pigment was prevalent because it was the most stable and cost-effective color that could withstand the high temperatures of the kilns. Pitchers with rural scenes, including horse-drawn carriages, chariots, or other figures in a landscape, were very common. Such pieces are frequently English, often originating from the Staffordshire region, and can be dated anywhere from the 19th to the early 20th century.
